Can you tell us about yourself?
I am Prince Adegoke Seyi Awalade-Ologbenla, a graduate of sociology from Crawford University, a fashion designer and a serial entrepreneur.

Kindly tell us about your business.
St. Calypso Couture International was created in 2008 out of passion as a side hustles while in year three in the university, but grew into a company in 2010 after the compulsory national youth service. We started by making printed T-shirts and detailed bespoke shirts before it’s grown into full garment production company that we are today. Compare to others, we are not just the popular private tailors, in our company we are into the production of various kinds of products. Our bespoke brand also has both the high-end and affordable products.

As an undergraduate in 2008, why do you choose to be a fashion designer?
As a child, I grew up at the time when it was customary for children to aspire to become highly rated professionals, like doctors, lawyers, engineers, bankers, and etceteras. But I had always wanted something different; I have already set my mind in doing business, preferably to explore the fashion world. I developed the love for fashion designing because I had the privileged to learn about fabrics and designs from my parents. My mother owns an established fabrics store and my father was into exportation of African attire to the United Kingdom, so it enables me to toy with all kinds of fabrics and designs.

What are the challenges you’ve encountered in your business and the steps taken to conquer them?
The lack of funds to operate in full capacity, high cost of materials, epileptic power supply, and unavailability of necessary mechanism to expand in mass. As an employer of labour with over ten employees on my payroll, the unavailability of funds (loans and grants) has hindered the will to unleash long list of designs and also increase the number staffs.

Government should make low interest rate accessible to SMEs, partners should be giving an enabling environment to operate, and power distribution companies should be committed to value oriented services.
As a serial entrepreneur what advice do you have for young lads and prospective entrepreneurs?

Be consistent, work hard, be creative, work smart, stay humble, offer values, be a problem solver, be trustworthy, and be diligent. “If you ever need to copy, copy smart and recreate greatness”.
